Automotive manufacturers and suppliers were impressed with the cost and performance benefits of Ultraseal International’s recycling porosity sealants at the recent Engine Expo North America show.
Several manufacturers and suppliers expressed an interest after hearing how it was far more economical to use recycling sealants such as Rexeal 100™ as a routine quality enhancement than it was to scrap parts that leaked.
Vacuum impregnation with sealant is a reliable and permanent solution to the eternal problem of casting porosity – microscopic holes in cast metal parts that can create leak paths that ultimately cause a part to fail.
Bob Remler, Vice President of Ultraseal America Inc., explained the economic and environmental benefits of impregnation with Ultraseal’s recycling sealants at a presentation attended by a number of top industry figures.
He explained that for a typical four-cylinder engine block weighing 20 kilograms, the cost of scrapping the finished machined engine block was $90 – far more expensive than the $8 cost of vacuum impregnation.
The largest aluminum casting supplier and a leading automotive manufacturer were among the audience for his talk at the Open Technology Forum being held as part of Engine Expo at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Michigan.
Mr Remler said: “Visitors to our stand were interested in the genuine cost reduction advantage, performance advantage and environmental benefits of our porosity sealants and they were impressed with our products’ global approvals.
“There is a continuing trend that while engines are getting smaller and lighter, they are also producing more power, with increased efficiency. The thinner the casting, the more likely it is that porosity may cause a problem.
“Vacuum impregnation is an important quality enhancement which permits manufacturers to make castings with thinner cross sections without worrying that porosity will cause problems. Ultraseal’s porosity sealants allow them to produce leak-free castings at lower cost.”
Visitors to the exhibition ranged from designers and technicians, corporate buyers and engineering managers through to chief executives of Tier One suppliers and program managers.
Ultraseal America is a global leader in the design and manufacture of porosity sealants and vacuum impregnation equipment. It is part of the UK based Ultraseal International Group which has operations in China, India, the United States, an office in Japan and a network of 22 agents/distributors around the world.
With a proud history of innovation in the market, Ultraseal was first to market with modern methacrylate-based sealants, first to market with recycling sealants and today produces the global benchmark recycling sealant Rexeal 100™, which is approved to US Military specification MIL-I-17563C (Class 1 and 3).
