Philadelphia Periodontist Says Women Win Battle of the Sexes in Terms of Oral Health Maintenance

– Results of a recent study on women and oral health duplicate what Philadelphia periodontist Dr. David DiGiallorenzo sees routinely at his office.

Female patients have a track record of being more proactive about maintaining their oral health, says DiGiallorenzo, a Philadelphia dental implants specialist.

Research that was published in April in the Journal of Periodontology shows that women are nearly two times more likely to have undergone a regular dental checkup within the past year.

The study was performed by the Okayama University School of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and it found that women had a greater chance of making follow-up appointments for treatment that was recommended at the time of their dental exam.

The more than 800 women- ages 18 and 19- in the study also had more favorable indicators of periodontal health, such as fewer cases of dental plaque, calculus and bleeding on probing. All of these are signs of potential periodontal disease.

Other findings from the study as outlined on www.DrBicuspid.com included:
•    Females are 26 percent more likely than males to floss daily.
•    44 percent of females understand that periodontists can help promote overall good health, compared with 33 percent of males.

“Women are more diligent about addressing health concerns, and they seem to comprise at least eighty percent of the dental procedures we provide,” DiGiallorenzo says. “I attribute it to their desire to obtain a higher level of health and wellness.”
