â€œTootsieâ€ Sashays into NYC
New York, NY (rushprnews) June 7, 2007- â€“ As a special 25th anniversary screening, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciencesâ€™ â€œMonday Nights with OscarÂ®â€ (MNWO) film series will present the 1982 Best Picture nominee â€œTootsie,â€ on Monday, June 18, at 7 p.m. at the Academy Theater in New York City.
Shot on location in and around New York, â€œTootsieâ€ is the comedic story of Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman), an out-of-work actor who disguises himself as â€œDorothy Michaelsâ€ to land a role in a soap opera.
The film also stars Jessica Lange, Bill Murray, Teri Garr and Dabney Coleman. Lange won a Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance as Dorseyâ€™s love interest, Julie Nichols.
â€œTootsieâ€ received an additional nine Academy AwardÂ® nominations: Actor in a Leading Role (Hoffman), Actress in a Supporting Role (Garr), Cinematography (Owen Roizman), Directing (Sydney Pollack), Film Editing (Fredric Steinkamp, William Steinkamp), Original Song (â€œIt Might Be You,â€
(Music by Dave Grusin; Lyric by Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman), Best Picture (Pollack and Dick Richards, producers), Sound (Arthur Piantadosi, Les Fresholtz, Dick Alexander, Les Lazarowitz), and Writing â€“ Screenplay written directly for the screen (Screenplay by Larry Gelbart, Murray Schisgal; Story by Don McGuire, Gelbart).
The program will also include a screening of the 1982 animated short nominee â€œThe Great Cognito,â€ a stop-motion claymation short by Will Vinton. Vinton, who created the pop icons the California Raisins, won an Academy Award for the animated short â€œClosed Mondaysâ€ in 1974.
MNWO is a monthly series showcasing high-quality prints of films that have been nominated for or won Academy AwardsÂ®. This screening will feature a newly struck print from the Academy Film Archive.
The Academy Theater is located at 111 East 59th Street in New York City. Tickets for the screening are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID.
