Group Will Rebate a Portion of the Purchase Price of Veggie ‘Chicken’ Products
Norfolk, VA (RPRN) 8/10/2009–Inspired by the federal government’s wildly popular Cash for Clunkers program, which provides a financial incentive to car buyers who switch to more fuel-efficient vehicles, PETA has announced a new program, dubbed “Cash for Cluckers,” which offers a $1 rebate to nonvegetarians who purchase vegetarian “chicken” products. The rebate will come with a copy of PETA’s “Vegetarian Starter Kit,” which can also be ordered for free or downloaded at GoVeg.com.
Like its namesake, “Cash for Cluckers” is aimed at helping the environment. According to a United Nations report, the meat industry produces more greenhouse gasses than all the SUVs, cars, trucks, planes, and ships in the world combined. Researchers at the University of Chicago concluded that switching from a standard American diet to a vegan diet does more to combat climate change than switching from a standard American car to a hybrid. People who choose vegetarian foods also help reduce water pollution, deforestation, and other environmental problems while saving the animals’ lives and improving their own health.
“Driving a fuel-efficient car is a step in the right direction, but to be truly ‘green,’ it’s best to adopt a vegetarian diet,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “We hope that ‘Cash for Cluckers’ provides the stimulus and the inspiration people need to make the switch to a healthy, humane, and Earth-friendly vegetarian diet.”
