Beverly Hills, CA (RPRN) 7/24/2009â€”The 1939 Best Picture nominee â€œOf Mice and Menâ€ will be screened as the next feature in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciencesâ€™ series â€œHollywoodâ€™s Greatest Year: The Best Picture Nominees of 1939â€ on Monday, July 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academyâ€™s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. A newly restored sepia tone print will be screened.
Pre-show elements, which begin at 7 p.m., include the 11th chapter of the 1939 serial â€œBuck Rogers,â€ starring Buster Crabbe and Constance Moore, the comedy short â€œDog Dazeâ€ featuring Our Gang, and â€œNight Descends on Treasure Island,â€ a look at the 1939 San Francisco Worldâ€™s Fair.
Horror star Lon Chaney, Jr. had his greatest dramatic role as Lennie in this moving adaptation of the John Steinbeck classic, co-starring Burgess Meredith. â€œOf Mice and Menâ€ received four Academy AwardÂ® nominations, including Best Picture (Hal Roach, production company), Music â€“ Original Score (Aaron Copland), Music â€“ Scoring (Copland) and Sound Recording (Hal Roach Studio Sound Department, Elmer A. Raguse, sound director).
Tickets for â€œOf Mice and Menâ€ are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. Tickets may be purchased online at www.oscars.org, by mail, in person at the Academy during regular business hours or, depending on availability, on the night of the screening when the doors open at 6:30 p.m.
