Boiler Guide: Boiler Installation Investigation Reconfirms Consumer Requirement to Compare Quotes

A recent investigation into the cost of new boiler installations in the UK has reaffirmed the need for consumers to use all the tools available to them to shop around for the best quote according to Boiler Guide, the UK’s leading online resource for homeowners and heating engineers regarding all boiler-related issues.

Consumer watchdog Which? conducted the undercover investigation by asking a number of installers – both nationwide including sector leader British Gas and independent – to quote on a boiler fitting at 13 different properties.

British Gas was found to quote more for the job at 10 of the houses and in once case even offered a quotation 75 per cent higher than the cheapest quote.

There were beneficial extras available with the British Gas deals with a magnetic filter and in some cases a power flush of the heating system rather than just a chemical cleanse being tabled by the sector leader. And with British Gas you also benefit from a fixed price that is inclusive of VAT – two things you need to inquire about if you do opt for an independent installer.

However, it did reiterate the consumer need to shop for the best price, both from nationally-recognised installers and regional technicians.

David Holmes, Boiler Guide’s founder, said: “This Which? investigation is clear proof that you’re not just guaranteed the best price by going with a nationally recognised firm. Regional installers can, in some cases, match if not beat quotes from UK-wide recognised mega-firms.

“It’s a case of finding the deal that’s best for you and your home. If you’d rather opt for aftercare services and the guarantees of national firms then that is your prerogative. However, if you’re looking for the cheapest quote from a more localised installer, comparing quote prices is what you need to do.”

Boiler Guide is the prime source to find the best deal for you, for free. All you have to do is enter your details and boiler requirements – whether it be a boiler replacement, a service or repair – and we’ll provide you with three different firms to quote you on the job in hand. These firms will be a mix of both local Gas Safe Registered independent technicians in your area, and nationally recognised companies.

The second part of the Which? investigation was to survey 10,000 members of the public who have had boilers installed. And the results showed that a higher percentage of people who had independently installed boilers were very satisfied compared to those who went with British Gas.

“It’s a testament to local technicians who are continually fighting for work against the major firms in the sector,” added Holmes.

“They can offer a service just as good as nationals, but offering the chance to develop a relationship if more work is required in the area in the future.

“Boiler Guide’s simple quotation procedure means you can compare the price offered by a larger UK-covering group and the smaller firms in your areas. It’s then totally up to you which quotation you’d like to take up, if any.”
