The Daily – Un Certain Regard: “Tulpan” by Sergey Dvortsevoy
CANNES (rushprnews) 05/23/2008- As director Sergey Dvortsevoy’s debut feature, Tulpan, selected by Un Certain Regard, is eligible for the Caméra d’Or. It takes us to the Kazakh steppe to watch what becomes of Asa, a young sailor just discharged from military service. He is eager to start a new life as a shepherd, like his sister and her husband, but first, he too must marry. However, the only possible future wife on the sparsely populated steppe is Tulpan, and she finds him unappealing.
Sergey Dvortsevoy recalls the difficult filming conditions: “It’s quite complicated for a crew to stay in a remote region for such a long time. Nature is hostile. Not only because of the weather, but also due to the large numbers of insects, poisonous snakes, and spiders. Especially in May, because they all “awaken” with the arrival of spring. Every morning, we’d find some in our shoes. Actually, the biggest challenge was the slant we’d decided to give to the shoot, which required a great deal of time and patience from the technicians.”
