NEW YORK (RUSHPRNEWS) AUGUST 19, 2008–The Source had become known as the “hip-hop bible” before being taken over by new owners last year. The new owners, entertainment lawyer L. Londell McMillan and investment banker Jeremy Scott, are hoping to continue the tradition by teaming up with Spike Lee and Nas for the magazine’s 20th anniversary cover photo shoot.
The new issue of the magazine will feature four different collectable covers shot by famed movie director Spike Lee.
“The cover stars, LL Cool J, Queen Latifah, Ice Cube, and Nas, they all have history of longevity and of always changing the game and I think that Spike Lee captured that,” Amy Andrieux, The Source’s new general manager told SOHH.
“Spike is very down to earth. On set he was actually very much involved, paying attention to what the artists were doing, asking them if they were comfortable, asking them about their music [and] what they were working on.”
Andrieux also said that Spike’s appearance and demeanor was an inspiration to The Source’s employees who went through the bankruptcy last year.
“It was great,” she said. “Everyone was moved in the office. People who had been here for quite some time even said it was the first time they felt such a great feeling. It was so inspiring to them.”
Andrieux said that she is hoping the boost in morale will help boost the magazine back to the status it had in it’s heyday.
“Like hip-hop we’ve had out highs and lows,” she said. “But moving forward we’re looking to appeal to a multi-generational hip-hop community that is international.”
“It’s not going to be an easy task but we’re so willing and so confident in The Source brand.”
The 20th anniversary issue of The Source is said to hit newsstands on August 19.
