Steven Spielberg and Will Smith To Remake Old Boy

By Doug Nagy

LOS ANGELES(RushPRnews)11/10/08-It appears the legendary Korean film Old Boy is going to be remade by the superstar Hollywood team of Spielberg and Smith. We get the scoop from our friends at coming soon: Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in early discussions to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook-park’s Old Boy, says Variety. DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and the new film will be distributed by Universal.

In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he’s released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge. Smith who would play the kidnapped man if all the pieces fall into place. Spielberg is looking for a writer to begin the development process.

I have yet to see this Korean film. Every time I mention that I haven’t seen it people usually say “you haven’t seen Old Boy; what the fuck!” It’s a film that comes highly recommended and has had heaps of praise piled upon it.

I can only imagine that some of you are quite disgusted at the news of a Hollywood remake with Spielberg and Smith at the helm.

If they remake this film I sincerely hope they keep it as dark violent and violent as the original. People have very strong feelings towards this picture and I would hate to see it watered down. In light of this remake news I am going to finally track this down and watch it – so I may have a more educated opinion on the matter.

International friends – what do you think about this news. I am especially interest to know the thoughts of Old Boy fans.
