DNC Adopts Democrats Abroad’s Stand Defending Habeas Corpus
Washington, DC (rushprnews) 02/23/2007 -THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE ADOPTS DEMOCRATS ABROAD’S STAND DEFENDING HABEAS CORPUS -The Bush administration continues to reject the Writ of Habeas Corpus in its actions both domestically and internationally.
In its Winter Meeting this weekend, the Democratic National Committee (the DNC) urged all Democratic members of the 110th Congress to enact legislation that would undo the damage to the rule of law and to restore the fundamental rights and privileges of the US Constitution limited by the Military Commissions Act by restoring the Writ of Habeas Corpus.
This action was based on a resolution submitted at the meeting by delegates of Democrats Abroad, the official arm of the DNC for Americans living outside the United States.
Dozens of DNC members including all the Vice-Chairs co-sponsored their initiative.
One of the last things the Republican Congress did in 2006 was to pass the Military Commissions Act, an attempt to prevent impeachment inquiries for torture and tossing people in jail without recourse or charges,’ said Michael Ceurvorst, International Chair of Democrats Abroad. “We put our protest into words for Democrats around the world, which the entire DNC has made its own. Next we need laws from our Democratic Congress to overturn that despicable and despotic legislation as well as to investigate torture and the denial of habeas corpus writs.â€
This resolution will strengthen Congress’ hand in rejecting Bush’s cavalier dismissal of rights anchored in the Constitution,†Cuervorst concluded.
