Cease and Desist Brought Against McCain-Palin for Song Theft
By Janet Thompson and Jeffrey Jolson
HOLLYWOOD, CA (RUSHPRNEWS) 9/7/09 – If someone took $100,000 from you and furthermore used it to promote a cause that you despised, how would you feel? Especially when your financial stability and reputation were severely compromised.
That’s what Nancy and Anne Wilson of rock group Heart are saying bout GOP VP candidate Sarah Palin’s use of their hit “Barracuda.” The Wilsons said their Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease-and-desist notice to the McCain-Palin campaign Palin.
In a statement the Wilsons wrote: “Sarah Palin’s views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song ‘Barracuda’ no longer be used to promote her image. The song ‘Barracuda’ was written in the late ’70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business. ” Republican officials didn’t ask for permission to use the song and would “not have been given the OK if they had done so,” the Wilsons said.
Palin was keen on using the song, as “Sarah Barracuda” has been her nickname since high school. It’s odd that anyone would be proud of this; in Wikipedia, a barracuda is defined as a “veracious predator, dangerous to humans.” Ironically, Palin’s actions mirror perfectly what the song is about – disrespect with regard to the value of a creative work and intellectual copyrights. It’s like the bank robber singing about robbing the bank.
This Heart affair is her third scandal in two weeks. It is added the abuse of power allegations towards Palin and her pregnant un-wed teen daughter. This is a matter of concern for the person that could be a heartbeat away from the Presidency.
