Risky “Casino Royale” Bets Keep Paying Off for Bond
By Jeffrey Jolson HOLLYWOOD, CA (rushprnews) 02/18/07 — The latest James Bond film “Casino Royale” took a lot of chances with blonde Bond Daniel Craig, and a leaner, meaner no-frills 007. Producer Barbara Broccoli’s choices paid off big with fans as well as critics and is now scoring some film industry craft awards as well.
The 21st installment in the James Bond franchise raked in the chips on Saturday in Beverly Hills at the Art Directors Guild Awards with a win for as best contemporary film for its production design. The kudo follows the picture’s British Academy Award for best sound and Visual Effects Society’s crown for its special effects.
“Casino Royale” took in $587 million worldwide and keeps updating its franchise-record $167 million domestically. Changing from Pierce Brosnan to Craig and departure from the gadget and quip-heavy earlier entries was criticized as a dangerous risk to the successful Bond formula. The move was made by Barbara Broccoli and step-brother Michael Wilson, offspring of legendary Bond producer Albert Brocolli. The pair took over with the first Brosnan feature “GoldenEye” in 1995 and have scored higher grosses with each successive film
