New Year's Resolutions That Feels Good And Help Others

NEW YORK (RushPRnews)12/29/08-For most of us, the New Year's resolutions that we make with the best of intentions will be tossed out faster than the holiday fruitcake. Maybe that's because our typical resolutions—getting organized, pinching pennies, or losing weight—primarily benefit ourselves. Isn't it always more rewarding to help others?

That's why, this year, I hope that you will join me in resolving to improve the lives of our animal companions, both those who share our homes and the countless others who are at risk of abuse and neglect. There are so many ways that you can make a difference for animals—starting with supporting PETA's efforts to protect cats, dogs, bunnies, birds, and other animals with your tax-deductible donation today.

In these challenging economic times, many people are no longer able to provide food, veterinary care, and other basic necessities for their animal companions. Even worse, many animals are being abandoned; many cats and dogs are being left to fend for themselves in the middle of winter.

We can not ignore this growing problem and let these defenseless animals suffer, but we need the resources to do everything we possibly can to help them.

So please make a tax-deductible gift to PETA today. Every new donor who gives $30 or more will receive PETA's 2009 "Rescued" calendar featuring animals PETA has helped to save from abuse and neglect.

I also hope that in addition to helping PETA reduce the suffering of animal companions in the greatest need, you will consider the following resolutions for the special animals in your own life:
If you have a dog, pledge to walk him or her every day, even when it's cold outside and you'd rather hide under a blanket. Few things are more important to your canine companion's health and happiness than the opportunity to stretch his or her legs each day.

Set aside some "kitty quality time" every day to play with, brush, and bond with your cat. It's sometimes too easy to overlook our feline friends, but they can get bored and lonely too.

Promise to have your cats and dogs spayed or neutered, if you haven't already.

These simple procedures help protect your furry friends from many types of cancer and prevent thousands of animals from being born only to end up abandoned on the streets or dumped at animal shelters.

If there is a lonely "backyard dog" in your neighborhood, try befriending his or her guardian. Start by politely talking to him or her about the dog's needs, such as companionship, fresh food and water every day, and a warm and dry doghouse filled with straw. Many lucky dogs have had their lives changed because someone like you cared enough to intervene.

Sadly, as you know, most companion animals aren't lucky enough to have a caring person like you to look after their well-being. Heartbreaking numbers of them are neglected and beaten by cold-hearted owners. They are trapped in the nightmarish world of dogfighting or chained outside all year long with no shelter from the bitter cold or blistering heat.

For the sake of these desperately needy animals, I hope that I can count on you to make as generous a year-end contribution as you can to ensure that PETA can help these animals.

Thank you for resolving to share your warmth with animals this holiday season. Best wishes to you and your animal companions for a happy, healthy new year!

Kind regards,

Ingrid E. Newkirk
President

PETA

P.S. By making a $30 gift as a new donor, not only will you help our work for dogs, cats, and all animals, you'll also receive PETA's beautiful 2009 "Rescued" calendar. Please make a special tax-deductible gift today.
